Telephoto lenses are widely
used in sports coverage, to get a "closer" view of the action
(Fig. 6.4). . . . The pitcher in Figure 6.4 appears to be
much closer to the batter than he would to someone sitting
in the bleachers because of the compression of depth by the
telephoto lens.
